The Dementia Program Director will plan, organize, develop, and direct the overall operation of the Memory 
Care Unit in accordance with state regulations that govern the facility, and as directed by the Administrator and 
Director of Nursing to ensure the highest degree of quality dementia care is maintained at all times. The 
Dementia Program Director will coach, inspire and connect with the dementia care staff and the residents as 
they explore their passions and interests with an emphasis on Dementia practice principles and care techniques.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist and support contract staff with facilitation of programmatic schedule.
  • Collaborate with contractors, Administrator and Director of Nursing to determine a therapeutic, environmental design for the Dementia Care unit.
  • Provide supervision, coaching, and recognition for team members that support the 3rd floor wings.
  • Maintain an engaging, homelike environment which presents residents with many opportunities to engage in their passions and connect with their peers and staff. 
  • Support the day-to-day delivery of the Dementia Care program.
  • Recruit, onboard, train, coach and develop the Dementia Care programming team members including, but not limited to part-time, full-time and contract Creative Arts Therapists.
  • In concert with contractors and Director of Recreation, develop a schedule of therapeutic programming designed for nursing home residents with dementia.
  • Evaluate the program utilizing quality enhancement tools and customer feedback.
  • Improve the program through problem solving, program development and refinement.
  • Conduct Skills Discoveries for residents who are experiencing distressing behaviors to facilitate a pro-active problem solving approach.
  • Investigate incidents involving memory care residents in order to identify and implement opportunity for improvement in care using the dementia care principles and techniques.
  • Maintain the Dementia Care program budget, and document and submit quarterly and annual reports to the funder.
  • In conjunction with the Administrator and Director of Nursing will assure proper training of all staff working with the Dementia Care program.
  • Perform all administrative duties as required by the Administrator such as completing forms, reports, assessments, evaluations, charting, etc., as necessary in a timely fashion.
  • Responsible to assure appropriate quantities of programming supplies are available to residents 24-7 and are clean and in good working condition.

This role partners with the Director of Nursing and Director of Recreation to ensure the residents plan of care is implemented according to the Dementia Care Practice Principles and techniques.

Qualifications:

Education

  • Master’s degree or higher
  • Evidence of licensure and state board certification in Recreation Therapy, Art Therapy, Music Therapy, or other Creative Arts Therapies
  • Certified Dementia Practitioner

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of management or healthcare related experience
  • Prior experience working with persons with Alzheimer's or related disorders Consultative nature with a mentoring/coaching demeanor and experience in training others

Equipment/Computer Software:

  • Microsoft Office, E-mail, and Internet navigation.
  • SigmaCare preferred

License/Registration:

  • Certified Dementia Practitioner
  • Valid NYS Professional Registered Nurse License
  • CPR Certification
