The Creative Arts Therapy Intern (Limited Permit) is part of the Therapeutic Recreation Department, providing both clinical and recreational group activities tailored to residents' needs and abilities. This role uses creative arts therapy interventions to support emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being, including end-of-life care. The intern works under limited permit supervision and contributes to special programs, education, and departmental goals in alignment with regulatory standards.

Responsibilities:
Provides a comprehensive assessment at the initial visit and updates documentation in accordance with facility policies and regulatory guidelines.
Performance Standards:
- Complete an initial patient profile within 7 days of admission and an individualized care plan within 10 days, as assigned by the Director of Recreation.
- Participate in interdisciplinary care plan meetings by contributing clinical observations and therapy goals in alignment with person-centered care plans.
- Monitor resident progress and recommend adjustments to care plans as needed.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including daily participation records, progress notes, interdisciplinary care plans, and quarterly evaluations, in line with facility policies.
- Participate in quality improvement activities relevant to the recreation department.
- Clearly identify and document the resident’s primary physical, psychosocial, or spiritual needs through interviews and clinical observation
- Maintain the confidentiality of residents, patients and family information
- Clearly elicits and/or reflects the current primary physical, psychosocial, or spiritual concern of the patient/family, through interview and/or clinical observation of non-verbal problem indicators.
- Effectively utilizes counseling skills to elicit assessment information including open-ended questions, empathetic listening, reflecting/re-phrasing responses, and validation of appropriate thoughts, feelings & behaviors.
- Displays a compassionate and non-judgmental attitude towards problems.
- Incorporate and documents discipline specific interventions into the overall plan-of-care goals, with ongoing updates as needed.
Qualifications:
- Master’s or doctoral degree in Creative Arts Therapy from a program registered by the New York State Education Department as licensure-qualifying or deemed substantially equivalent. Must be eligible for a limited permit (CAT-P) in New York State
- Prior clinical internship experience in a healthcare, mental health, or community setting as part of a Creative Arts Therapy graduate program.
- Experience with older adults or in long-term care is preferred but not required
- Word Processing, spreadsheet, and electronic medical records.
- Must be eligible for a limited permit (CAT-P) in New York State
- Active membership in the relevant national creative arts therapy association (e.g., AATA, ADTA, NADTA) is strongly preferred
